10 December 2004 Chicago, Illinois

miałam tylko nieco wiosny w palcach
wiatru we włosach
uśmiech
rozsypany cienkim dreszczem
po wodzie
byłam biedna

więc Krezus
przyszedł ubrany w fiolet
i sypnął złotem
z przepastnych otchłani nieba

milion gwiazd
zatańczyło
pod bzowym pniem
wzięłam gwiazdy
do zielonej sukienki
przyszpiliłam żeby świeciły

noc była ciepła i miękka
więc kiedy mnie ujrzałeś
ubraną w noc
stanąłeś
olśniony tym bogactwem
powiedziałeś głucho
kocham cię
powiedziałeś –
kupiłam miłość
za milion gwiazd
nieba

I had just a bit of spring in my fingers
wind in my hair
a smile
scattered with a slender shudder
on the water
I was poor

and so Croesus came
dressed in purple
and pulled a shower of gold
from the heavens’ bottomless depths

a million stars
danced
under the lilac tree
I took these stars
and pinned them to my green dress
so they would shine

the night was warm and soft
and so when you saw me
dressed in the night
you paused
dazzled by these riches
you voicelessly said
I love you
you said —
I bought love
for a million
of heaven’s stars
